July 7-10, 2022
23rd Annual Founders’ Day Celebration (2022)
SCHEDULE SUBJECT TO CHANGE:
Thursday, July 7 –
- 10-4 p.m. - POW Museum Open
- 6 p.m. - Heritage Award Presentation at Riverview Cemetery
- 6:30 p.m. – “Voices from the Past” presentation at Riverview Cemetery (in the green space) – witness history come alive. Featured residents of the cemetery share the stories of their lives as settlers in early Algona. Refreshments provided by Founders’ Day committee following presentation. Seating not provided – bring lawn chairs. There will be no walking at this presentation.
- 7 p.m. – Trivia Night at VFW
- 9 p.m. – Outdoor Movie at AHS stadium (rain date of Sunday, July 10)
- 9:30 a.m. - Weekly Business Coffee with Historical Society
- 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. – POW Museum open. Located at 114 South Thorington St.
- 10:30 a.m. – Free Children’s Movie at State 5 Theater sponsored by Morwens Kiwanis, Noon Kiwanis, and Founders' Day Committee
- 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Kossuth County Historical Society Museum open with special exhibit on display
- 1:30 p.m. – Free Children’s Movie at State 5 Theater sponsored by Morwens Kiwanis, Noon Kiwanis, and Founders' Day Committee
- 5 p.m. – Car Cruise-In Co-sponsored by Founders' Day committee, Kossuth Shrine Club, and MOJO Productions.
- 5 p.m. & 5:30 p.m. – Walk on Thorington – tours start at the corner of State Street and Thorington Street (by Stagemobile). Enjoy the history of Thorington Street in this walking tour
- 6:30 p.m. – Parade from corner of Thorington & Nebraska east to Harlan St., north to Call St., west to Thorington St. then south back to Nebraska St.
- 7 p.m. – Hip Liberty music performance on Stagemobile (west end of State St.)
- 8:30 – 11:30 p.m. – Rock A La Carte performing on Stagemobile
- Alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase at Billie Jo’s and Pep’s
- 7:30 a.m. registration, 8 a.m. Start -- Exercise for the Heart 5K/10K Walk or Run – “Let us put in the work for those that currently are unable to.” Route TBD
- Goodie bags available for all participants
- 9 a.m. & 1 p.m. – River Canoeing Expedition (pending level of water) 1-2 hr. outing along scenic bends of the East Fork River. Meet at Veteran’s Park, 9 a.m. sharp. Canoes, supplies, training, and transportation provided. Canoeing experience not necessary. Families welcome - children should be 9 or older and accompanied by an adult. Canoe holds 2-3 people. Wear closed toe shoes and pants that can get muddy. No charge. Pre-register by 3:30p.m. Friday, July 8 – Call 515-295-2138; space is limited.
- 9 – 11 a.m. Farmer’s Market on Carnegie Lawn area (corner of Dodge St. & Nebraska St.)
- 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Tours Schedule: OB Laing 9:30 a.m. & 1 p.m. – Wilcox PAC 10:30 a.m. & 2 p.m. – AMS / AHS Tour to follow PAC Tour
- 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Art in the Park – located at Carnegie lawn area. Sponsored by Stinson Prairie Arts Council
- 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Kossuth County Historical Society Museum open with special exhibit on display
- 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. – FREE Kid’s Bash!!! Sponsored by Algona Ambassadors on State St. (in front of Chamber office) games, face painting, sidewalk chalk art and much more. Kids up to age 12 – adult supervision required. Goodie bag for each participant. Free hot dogs for all in attendance.
- 11 a.m. – Kids Q Competition in Downtown Algona
- 1 p.m. – Bags Tournament – State Street between Dodge St. & Thorington St. (Rainout location to be Algona YMCA)
- 1 – 8 p.m. – Music by Mojo Productions on Stagemobile at West end of State Street
- 1 – 4 p.m. – POW Museum open
- 2 p.m. & 3 p.m.– Omaha Street Percussion performance - Carnegie lawn area on Nebraska Street
- 5:30 – 7 p.m. – BBQ Showdown Sampling – located on South Dodge St.
- 7:30 – 8 p.m. – BBQ Showdown Awards. Announced by Mojo Productions
- 8 a.m. – Showboat Open Golf Tournament at River Road Golf Club
- 1 – 4 p.m. – POW Museum open
- 2 p.m. – Repeat performance of “Voices from the Past” at Riverview Cemetery in the green space. No walking – bring lawn chairs
