The Auditor’s Office in Cerro Gordo County is now looking for additional poll workers for the November election, but new challenges have arisen due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cerro Gordo County Auditor Adam Wedmore said.
“We had a great list to start with, but on initial calls approximately half were unwilling or unable to work Election Day,” Wedmore told the Globe Gazette.
Other reasons for needing more poll workers span from people who have unexpected work commitments to people having to travel out of town. However, the main reason is due to coronavirus issues.
Many of the poll workers in the county are older, retired individuals who have the time to work and train during an election. Wedmore said that the elderly and retirees are also more vulnerable to harsh symptoms of the pandemic.
The Globe Gazette reports that nearly 926,000 Iowans have tested positive for the coronavirus since March of this year. This report is backed up by statistics provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 website.
