The percentage of unemployed residents was greater than the statewide total of 32.5 percent for this demographic group. In 2018 the total Sumner population reached 1,721.

Out of 1,155 people who had a job, 15 were employed in the Armed Forces and 1,140 belonged to the civilian labor force.
